One of Banville’s last collections, made up of 62 pieces which he introduces as follows: “these are but light fancies, but I have doubtless written poems long enough to be permitted to amuse myself with these mad arabesques (…) it is also amusing to have many of them and to hold out to the crowd pebbles from Eldorado, gems and diamonds, telling them gaily this only costs two sous.”
