A copy presented to Jean Hugues’s father, whose vocation as bookseller and publisher Char encouraged. Their friendship led to several publications, including Arrière-histoire du Poème pulvérisé in 1953, with a lithograph by Nicolas de Staël, and L’Effroi la joie, illustrated by Joseph Sima, in 1971. Jean Hugues would also found the gallery Le Point Cardinal, a meeting place for painters and poets.
Originally conceived for film, adapted for radio in 1948 with music by Pierre Boulez, and then published in 1949 with engravings by Georges Braque, Le Soleil des eaux draws on the memory of the fishermen of the Sorgue. Char depicts a community whose river and livelihood are threatened by a factory. Braque would later produce an illustrated edition, published by Louis Broder.
