With Le Père humilié, Paul Claudel completed one of his major dramatic cycles. Begun with L’Otage and continued in Le Pain dur, the Trilogie des Coûfontaine follows a single family across several generations, swept up in the political, religious and social upheavals of the nineteenth century. The title refers first to a father in the highest sense: Pius IX, the pope stripped of his temporal power when Italian troops entered Rome in September 1870, causing him to lose the Papal States and consider himself a prisoner in the Vatican. Claudel turns this political humiliation into a spiritual question, while also reflecting on fatherhood, possession and sacrifice.

Spine faded.
