A few months before his death, Paul Claudel returned to Jean Racine, a writer to whom he was linked by a circumstance that was not purely literary: since his election to the Académie française in 1946, Claudel had held the seat once occupied by Racine. Claudel died on February 23, 1955, and this small volume appeared the following year, the first posthumous title by the author.
