Written at the end of 1966, Charleston belongs to René Fallet’s “whisky” vein, a tone at once wry and nostalgic, where humor is always tinged with a light melancholy. Fallet, born in 1927, never knew the London of the Roaring Twenties, but he recreates its atmosphere with novelistic relish: fog, bowler hats, smoke-filled pubs, a Jack the Ripper-style murderer — the syncopated rhythms of the charleston run through this reinvented British exoticism, where his taste for caricature and his tenderness for outsiders and thwarted loves find full expression.
The deluxe printing was limited to only fifteen copies, as with Un idiot à Paris (1964) and Les Pas perdus (1965), making this one of the rarest books by the author. Fine condition.
