
Jean Jacquelin

Né à Paris le 26 mai 1905, Jean Jacquelin découvrit à dix ans les affiches de Vavasseur et n'eut de cesse d'en faire son métier : formé à l'école Germain Pilon puis directeur artistique de l'agence Step dès 1929, il travailla pour Peugeot, la SNCF, Air France, Shell et les 24 Heures du Mans avant de se consacrer, à partir de 1957, aux jaquettes des romans de Simenon aux Presses de la Cité — vingt-sept couvertures en cinq ans, soumises une à une à l'auteur qui les annotait parfois de sa main au verso. Affichiste de cinéma autant que dessinateur publicitaire, il laisse une œuvre graphique d'une remarquable cohérence formelle, tendue entre l'aplat lumineux et la suggestion narrative. Il s'éteignit le jour de son anniversaire, le 26 mai 1989, à Champrond dans la Sarthe.
