Published shortly after his fictionalized biography of Joseph Conrad (1950), Le Sacrilège malais is a short novel that already brings together many of Boulle’s characteristic themes: the clash of cultures, the tension between modernity and tradition, and the moral question raised by Western intervention in colonized societies.
Set in Malaysia, the plot explores the tragic consequences of a confrontation between Western rationalism and local beliefs. A European engineer, seeking to “save” a village according to his own logic, triggers a religious and human tragedy. The narrative economy already anticipates the novelist’s later art, soon confirmed by Le Pont de la rivière Kwaï the following year, and then by La Planète des singes in 1963.
