Albert Cohen’s fourth and final novel had a somewhat unusual genesis: in 1967, Cohen submitted the massive manuscript of Belle du Seigneur to Gallimard, whose reading committee raised concerns about its length, prompting Cohen to make substantial cuts. He later reworked these excised passages into a new narrative, conceived as a companion piece and final chapter to the adventures of Solal and his family. The result, Les Valeureux, published in 1969, forms the indispensable complement to Belle du Seigneur.
