This short story makes up the greater part of this issue of Les Cahiers du mois (pp. 9–53) and appeared shortly after Bove’s first novel, Mes amis, published the previous year. Bove deserves rediscovery: shamefully neglected today, he was nonetheless one of the important authors of the interwar period, having published some twenty novels before his premature death in 1945 at the age of forty-seven.
