Romain Gary’s last book, published posthumously, this testamentary work confesses, if confirmation were needed, that Gary was also Ajar, and explains why and how; it is also an essay on literature and its future: “I am therefore fully aware that these pages will no doubt seem derisory at the time of their publication, for, whether I wish it or not, since I am explaining myself here before posterity, I necessarily assume that posterity will still attach some importance to my works and, among them, to the four novels I wrote under the pseudonym Émile Ajar.”
