Une seule pensée [Liberté]
Under the heading “Poèmes,” La France Libre, a review published in London under the direction of André Labarthe and Raymond Aron, presented two poems — “Une seule pensée” (the original title of “Liberté”) by Paul Éluard and “Cantos” by Pierre Emmanuel — together with Albert Béguin’s closing piece quoting four extracts from poems by Jules Supervielle, Pierre Jean Jouve, Pierre Emmanuel and Louis Aragon. They appear on pages 397–400 of this issue. “Une seule pensée” opens the section and is printed on pp. 397–398. All these texts are taken from the June 1942 issue of the review Fontaine, and this printing of “Une seule pensée” is thus, chronologically, the second publication of the complete poem (after Fontaine), and its third mention overall (after Candide, which had given only an extract).
This publication precedes by about two weeks the book edition prepared in Paris by Paul Éluard and Noël Arnaud for La Main à plume, in which the poem would appear under its definitive title “Liberté,” within the collection Poésie et vérité 1942.
