Un sollievo nella malinconia

Milan, Società tipografica de' classici italiani, 1822.
1 vol. (octavo), 36 pp. printed on pink paper. Black goatskin, smooth spine decorated with a gilt all-over pattern, wide gilt garland frame on the covers, gilt edges (contemporary binding).
No copy recorded in the CCF. A very rare first edition of this small collection of distress, composed by Monti during an eye ailment that left him prostrate for many days. Aging and embittered, gradually losing his sight, the poet once cherished during the Napoleonic era found himself isolated, his muse clearly wearied — hence these laments against the “melancholy” that afflicted him until his death in 1828.
