This Maigret investigation — unusual in that the Inspector fails to solve the case — was written at Simenon’s property in the hills above Cannes, “Golden Gate,” from 26 February to 4 March 1956, following his well-established routine. The typescript is now held at the Fonds Simenon in Liège, Belgium.
