This one-act comedy, first performed at the Théâtre du Carillon, a Montmartre cabaret, on 24 August 1896, is a fierce satire mocking the courts, lawyers and other legal professionals: at the Palais de Justice in Paris, a deputy prosecutor — Maître Mépié — and a lawyer — Barbemolle — are at each other’s throats, while Monsieur Alfred, proprietor of the bistro “Le Pied qui remue,” exasperated by the behavior of one of his customers, Lagoupille, sues him for assault.
A good copy with a fine provenance: that of Pierre-Victor Stock, publisher of this text and of the greater part of Courteline’s work.
