Camus transposed and adapted for the stage Buzzati’s vertiginous Sept étages (1937), which follows Giovanni Corte as he moves from floor to floor of a clinic whose architecture ranks patients by the severity of their illness: an administrative allegory of fate that Camus tightens into a mechanism of anguish.
