Magnificent signed presentation inscription from Romain Gary to Max-Pol Fouchet:

Signed presentation inscriptions by Gary to literary critics are rare, and inscriptions expressing gratitude or complicity are rarer still — extremely so. Gary himself explains why: he had always found such gestures “unseemly.” Yet this exceptional inscription, sent to the critic Fouchet after his review of Les Cerfs-volants, is one of the most moving Gary ever wrote, composed “near the end of the road,” only months before his suicide. Signing on 6 June — the anniversary of the D-Day landings — Gary evokes in turn his literary beginnings, and, consciously or not, his approaching end (he would take his own life less than six months later, on 2 December 1980), the war and its bombs, which he himself had dropped, and all the other “kites flown” since.

An exceptional testimony in more ways than one.
