A tribute to poets who died in combat, Le Tombeau des Poètes is not merely an illustrated book, but a work of literary and artistic commemoration. Roland Dorgelès, himself the author of Les Croix de bois and a war veteran, sought to “save from oblivion” these young writers cut down by the war, “combatants known or unknown, and poets in their spare time.”
For this project he joined forces with two collaborators: André Dunoyer de Segonzac, who translated his own memories of the war into a series of expressive and powerfully evocative engravings, and Jacques Beltrand, engraver, publisher and master printer, who executed the work to the highest standards — the same craftsman with whom Genevoix worked on the edition of his Roman de Renard illustrated by Paul Jouve.
