“This book was first published in France under the title Le Mangeur d’Étoiles,” in a translation credited to John Markham Beach, the same pseudonym Gary had used for Promise at Dawn. The Talent Scout was, however, written directly in English, following a stay by Gary in Bolivia, and was published almost simultaneously in New York and London, in an identical text translated by Romain Gary himself.

The novel is the first installment of “La Comédie américaine,” completed by The Ski Bum in 1965. Both titles first appeared in English.
