The Roots of Heaven
New York, Simon and Schuster, [January] 1958.
1 vol. (150 x 215 mm) of 372 p., [1] and 2 f. Publisher's boards and dust jacket.
First American edition. First printing, with “First printing” stated.
The American translation appeared more than a year after the French edition. It was eagerly awaited, not least because the dust jacket still advertised the prize awarded the previous year: “The prix Goncourt novel by Romain Gary” could hardly go unnoticed. The Roots of Heaven proved such a success that, Los Angeles and Hollywood being what they are, the film world seized upon it: John Huston directing, Darryl F. Zanuck producing, Errol Flynn in the leading role, with Orson Welles and Juliette Gréco in supporting parts. The project appears to have originated even earlier: Huston had commissioned a script from Patrick Leigh Fermor as early as 1957.
A fine copy, rare in this true first printing.
