The Roots of Heaven
New York, Cardinal edition, Pocket Books, (November) 1958.
1 vol. (105 x 160 mm) of 389 p. and [1]. In wrappers, with illustrated cover.
First American paperback edition.
The American translation followed the French edition by little more than a year and was eagerly awaited, not least because the cover still advertised the prize the novel had received: “The Prix Goncourt novel by Romain Gary” did not go unnoticed, and the book proved a success, with Gary’s cause striking a chord with public opinion. The paperback edition appeared the same year in the most celebrated of paperback series, the Giant Cardinal line from Pocket Books: it was the 61st title in the series and Gary’s second book to appear in paperback.
