The Company of Men
London, Michael Joseph, [September] 1950.
1 vol. (125 x 190 mm) of 254 p. and [2] f. Publisher's boards, illustrated dust jacket.
First English edition, translated by Joseph Barnes. First printing, with “first published” statement.
This is the first of Romain Gary’s titles to appear in England, six months after the American publication of the text. Like Tulipe, this is a book of the immediate post-war period, a climate strongly felt throughout the story, and one also marked by the fascination the United States exerted over Europe, which was then discovering a new way of life, Hollywood, the dollar and the consumer society.
A rare first English title by Gary, difficult to find in first printing.
This copy is in fine condition.
