Published in 1979, Sophie’s Choice is Styron’s great novel of maturity. Through the voice of Stingo, a young Southern writer, the book brings together the memory of the Holocaust, American guilt, desire, madness and survival around the figure of Sophie Zawistowska, a survivor of Auschwitz.
Winner of the 1980 National Book Award for Fiction, the novel soon became an international success. Its 1982 film adaptation, starring Meryl Streep as Sophie, fixed the title in common usage: a “Sophie’s choice” now means a tragic and morally unbearable alternative.
Spine of dust jacket slightly faded.
