A prolific engraver and illustrator, Gaston Barret was particularly active during the 1950s, producing numerous illustrated editions of contemporary and classic authors. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he found in Brittany the inspiration for his largely figurative paintings, marked by the influence of the Pont-Aven school and post-Impressionism.

His illustrated work includes several major titles, among them Le Grand Meaulnes, Citadelle, Topaze, La Maison Tellier, Histoire naturelle, as well as three books by Maurice Genevoix: Raboliot, La Boîte à pêche and La Loire, Agnès et les garçons.
