Since the 1990s, Pascal Quignard (born 1948), an inimitable writer and winner of the 2002 Prix Goncourt for Les Ombres errantes, has built a body of work at the crossroads of the tale, the essay, the fragment and poetic meditation. Princesse vieille reine continues this singular project and brings together five tales, born of Quignard’s imagination around five women’s dresses: a Frankish tunic, a Chinese silk, a Japanese kimono, a fur coat, a crinoline dress.

Quignard wrote this work for the actress Marie Vialle: an offering, and almost a commission for the actress, who staged and performed the five texts of Princesse, vieille reine at the Théâtre du Rond-Point in September 2015, just as the volume was being published.
