The piano had accompanied Gide since childhood. His close engagement with Chopin nourished a reflection on interpretation and the relationship to a work of art, reflected in his Notes sur Chopin, collected in volume form in 1948.
The Fondation Catherine Gide preserves several photographs from this sitting, taken by Laure Albin-Guillot in 1945, notably a portrait of Gide seated at the piano, smoking (PH-06-016), and another pose, astride a chair beside the instrument (PH-06-013).
The photograph is signed in the lower right margin by the photographer.
A rare original print of one of the most famous postwar portraits of Gide.
