Portrait of the poet by Man Ray, from the period when he was involved in the Surrealist movement.
It was Paul Éluard who advised René Char to have his portrait taken by Man Ray, in 1930: “My dear boy, if you get back in time, go (…). It is essential.”
This celebrated portrait is very rare in a period print. The Daniel Filipacchi collection held a period print, unsigned (sale, 1995, no. 181), while the Pierre Leroy collection held only a later print, made by Pierre Gasman.
