The volume brings together three of Anouilh’s major historical dramas, all first staged in private Parisian theaters: L’Alouette (Joan of Arc), premiered at the Théâtre Montparnasse-Gaston-Baty on 15 October 1953 (directed by Anouilh & Piétri); Becket ou l’Honneur de Dieu, premiered at the Théâtre Montparnasse on 8 October 1959 (Anouilh & Piétri), later the source of Peter Glenville’s 1964 film; and La Foire d’empoigne, premiered at the Comédie des Champs-Élysées on 11 January 1962 (Anouilh & Piétri), published here as early as 1960.
