[Photo] « Romain Gary, 1980 »
Photograph taken by press photographer (Life, Paris-Match, etc.) Jean-Claude Deutsch, who took several shots that day (6 February 1977) on the rue du Bac. It belongs to the series produced for the article “Carte blanche à Romain Gary” published in Paris-Match (no. 448, 25 February 1977, p. 89), on the occasion of the publication of his latest novel, Clair de femme (Gallimard, 4 February 1977). Gary poses standing in front of a patchwork of photographs of his wife Jean Seberg, of the Gary/Seberg couple, and of their son Diego. This panel hung on the wall of his study, to the left of his desk, in his Paris apartment at 108 rue du Bac, which he occupied from 1963 until his death on 2 December 1980, the very year of this inscription.
An extremely rare and moving autograph presentation inscription and caption, dated the very year of Gary’s suicide.
Signed photographs of Romain Gary are extremely rare.
This one is reproduced in the Cahier de L’Herne devoted to him (May 2012, p. 47 of the reproductions section).
