In this essay at the crossroads of music, painting, philosophy and death, Pascal Quignard continues his exploration of the foundational darkness from which art wrests itself out of silence. This demanding text extends the author’s meditation on the stage, disappearance and “désêtre” — themes already explored in Les Ombres errantes and La Barque silencieuse.
As is often the case with Quignard, the figures he summons (Caravaggio, Dürer, Diderot, Messiaen, Schumann…) weave a network of echoes and dissonances, in which his incisive and sinuous style opens onto the unexpected.
