Original steel printing matrix used for the celebrated Pop Shop shopping-bag design, bearing Haring’s dancing figure with the “Pop Shop” star, the address of his legendary store at 292 Lafayette Street, NYC, and his iconic Radiant Baby.
Accompanied by an original vintage Pop Shop plastic bag printed with the design, providing a remarkable pairing of the printing tool with the finished object.
Opened in downtown Manhattan in 1986, Haring’s Pop Shop was conceived as an extension of his artistic practice: a place where his imagery could circulate beyond galleries and museums through affordable objects available to everyone. The project reflected both Haring’s friendship with Andy Warhol and his fascination with the Factory’s approach to art, production and popular culture.
A rare surviving artifact from one of the defining experiments in art and accessibility of 1980s New York.
