The photographic prints have been mounted on thin card, each framed and titled in black; they reproduce the engravings designed by Bida for the octavo edition published the same year, also by Charpentier. The process used by Collin, still experimental at the time, represents one of the earliest applications of photography to literary illustration, well before photogravure became widespread.
A very fine copy, in full morocco by Bernard David. His son, Salvador, would take over the workshop from 1890, signing his work “S. David.”
Rare in this issue on China paper.
Vicaire, VI, 1283–1285.
