Paris, Marcel Lubineau, (November 10) 1959.
1 vol. (190 x 280 mm) of 113 p., [3] and 1 f. In sheets, in publisher's chemise and slipcase.
Second illustrated edition. 18 etchings by Jacques Houplain (printed by Manuel Robbe).

Limited to 425 copies on Rives paper, this one of 50 copies accompanied by a suite with remarques, a print on silk and a rejected plate [relating to the illustration for “Le Désert”] (no. 69).

This edition of Noces was the last book published in Camus’s lifetime before the accident of January 1960: the volume reached Lourmarin during December 1959, and no copy inscribed by the author is known.

Jacques Houplain’s etchings were inspired by his reading of Noces and by a stay in Algeria in the 1950s. The edition is extremely carefully produced, following the approach used for La Femme adultère, with the text set within the etching itself. Like P. E. Clairin, Houplain was a former resident of the Villa Abd-el-Tif, though of a different generation: Clairin was there in 1929, when Camus lived in Algiers, while Houplain was in residence in 1949, when Camus was living in Paris.

A fine copy, rare in this issue.
