André Malraux’s last text, published a few months after his death, this study of literature since the nineteenth century nonetheless departs from conventional literary history: personal opinions and interpretations abound, leading to a reflection on the audiovisual media and their profound impact on our relationship with the world.
Already ill, Malraux completed this text before sending Sophie de Vilmorin, his last companion, to deliver the manuscript to Gallimard. This was in October 1976. He died a month later, on 23 November 1976, three months before publication.
