This “auto-socio-biography” was written by Annie Ernaux drawing on the diary she kept during the 1960s, revisiting without filter or reserve an event that had upset her life: the ordeal of a young student seeking an abortion, four years before the contraceptive pill was legalized and twelve years before the Veil law.

The novel was adapted for the screen in 2021 by Audrey Diwan, whose film won the Golden Lion at the 78th Venice Film Festival. Annie Ernaux was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature the following year.
