Published in the mid-1980s, L’Évangile du fou continues the satirical and polemical vein of a deliberately provocative writer, the founder of L’Idiot international. Between autofiction and political attack, Hallier mixes aphorisms, fragmented narratives and subversive meditations on childhood, religion and power.
The book competed for the 1986 Prix Goncourt, losing in the final round to Valet de nuit by Michel Host — a far less provocative text!
