Lettre autographe à Carlo Rim

A novelist, essayist, screenwriter, film director and press cartoonist, Rim devised his pseudonym from his own initials, R.J.M., turning the J into an I and prefacing it with Carlo, an Italian first name then fashionable in France. Under this pseudonym he published his first drawings in Le Petit Provençal, a newspaper edited by his own father, who had no idea his son was the artist!

Having failed his baccalauréat and needing to retake it, he was tutored by Marcel Pagnol, with whom he remained friends for life. Rim went on to sign some forty screenplays (original works or adaptations) and dialogues, the most famous being Maurice Tourneur’s Justin de Marseille (1935), while also serving as editor-in-chief of the magazines Vu and Jazz.
