Autograph letter signed, congratulating his friend the journalist Frédéric Lefèvre on his recent honor, while taking a swipe at the former President of the Council and Minister of Fine Arts, Édouard Herriot.
“Mon bien cher ami, Je voulais aller vous voir hier à Paris. Mais j'ai raté mon train. Je serai donc le dernier à vous écrire que cet amphibie d'Herriot a eu cette fois la nageoire heureuse, et qu'il a bien placé son ruban rouge. Dites aussi à votre charmante femme, qui m'a si simplement et si gentiment reçu jadis, que je prends ma part de sa joie et de sa fierté. Je vous embrasse bien affectueusement. G. Bernanos.”

Herriot had already preceded Poincaré as President of the Council of Ministers, in 1924 and 1926. He would hold the post a third and final time in 1932, during Albert Lebrun’s first presidency. Awarded the Légion d’honneur much earlier, in 1907, Herriot notably returned it to Pétain in 1941, which led to his house arrest in September 1942; deemed unfit for deportation by the German authorities, he was instead interned in an asylum, where he feigned madness.
After the war, he became president of the new National Assembly in 1947, having already been elected to the Académie française on December 5, 1946. Bernanos, twenty years earlier, had judged him well: a truly agile fish!
