The book appeared in January 1953 in the “Espoir” series, edited at Gallimard by Albert Camus.
The title comes from Claudio Monteverdi. In his Settimo libro de madrigali, published in Venice in 1619, Monteverdi included a Lettera amorosa, set to a text by Claudio Achillini, whose principle is singular: a love letter becomes music.
In 1952, Char had published “Guirlande terrestre pour un ange de plomb” in the Portuguese review Árvore, which he adapted into a “work in progress”; ten years later he would produce a splendid illustrated edition with Braque, with a further revised text.
A fine copy of this important title by Char.
Slight sunning to the margin of the wrapper.
