L’Esprit confus

Paris, Gallimard, (livraison du 1er juin) 1956.
1 booklet (135 x 210 mm) of 18 p. and [1] f. Stapled.
Offprint of the story published in La Nouvelle NRF of 1 June 1956.

Small printing, unnumbered.

First published state of the story later collected in L’Exil et le Royaume in 1957, under the title Le Renégat ou Un esprit confus. Camus gives voice to a missionary held captive in a desert town, mutilated and then converted to the cult of his captors. This interior monologue is the only first-person narrative among the six stories in the collection.

Its form recalls La Chute, also published in 1956, but the two texts are distinct: La Chute is not an expanded version of Le Renégat, and the interest of this offprint lies in particular in its original title and in the state of the text prior to its inclusion in the collected volume.

A single printing of a small number of copies.
