Les Testaments trahis is a collection of nine essays on art, literature and music, centered on the art of the novel: the spirit of humor from which it was born, its links with music, and what Kundera calls the existential wisdom of the novel. Between a critical tribute to Kafka and a revival of Stravinsky that brings his magnificent music to life, Kundera invokes the art of Rabelais, Rushdie, Stravinsky, Beethoven, Broch, Kafka, Musil, Mann, Hemingway, Faulkner and Chamoiseau. In 1996, the collection received the American Composers’ Society prize for the “best book written on music”; together with L’Art du roman (1986) and Le Rideau (2005), it forms a remarkable trilogy on Kundera’s major aesthetic preoccupations.
