The text was published by Jacques Schiffrin based on the London edition, the only one to which he had access. He followed the text as it had appeared in April 1943 in La Revue du monde libre, reproducing its table of contents, to which he added Druon’s preface, taken from the London edition published by Cahiers du silence. “The title borne by Vercors’s story is, in the London edition, Le silence de la mer. In the Revue du Monde Libre, Les Silences de la mer. Not having been able to consult the manuscript, we have chosen this latter title.”
