This great French saga, following Troyat’s earlier Russian saga Tant que la terre durera, spans just over thirty years, from 1912 to the liberation of Paris in August 1944. It offers a portrait of France in the first decades of the twentieth century through the fate of three women: Maria, the mother, Amélie, the daughter, and Élisabeth, the granddaughter.
