Les Femmes savantes was first performed for the Paris public on 11 March 1672. Excellent receipts attest to its initial success, though this waned in the following months. The play was printed on 10 December 1672. It “continues Molière’s campaign against préciosité, but with new and important dimensions: the place given to science, and to philosophy, in women’s concerns. A sign of the times: lectures and books proliferated at this period, aiming to give women access to a scientific and philosophical culture.”
A.-J. Guibert, Bibliographie des œuvres de Molière publiées au XVIIe siècle.
