Originally a resolutely historical series, the Flammarion “Hier et aujourd’hui” collection turned, in the early 1930s, toward contemporary texts set during the Great War. Following volumes on Louis XIV, Madame de Pompadour, Napoleon and the Empress of Russia came two titles by Maurice Genevoix: abridged versions of Les Éparges and then of Sous Verdun — renamed Jours de la Marne — each enriched with four photogravure plates.
These inexpensive, popular editions, with their photographic covers, proved highly successful with the public.
Rare copies in as-new condition, as issued.
Each copy bears the author’s bookplate: from the library of Maurice Genevoix, at “Les Vernelles.”
