[GUITRY]
Les Desseins de la Providence
Paris, Ch. Gerschel, 1932.
1 gelatin silver print (165 x 222 mm), signed in the plate at lower left margin “Ch. Gerschel. Paris,” with stamp on verso “Reproduction autorisée... mention Photo Gerschel Paris.”
Stage photograph depicting Sacha Guitry costumed as a cardinal in Les Desseins de la Providence.
Play in two acts written by Guitry and first performed at the Théâtre de la Madeleine on 14 March 1932: “Sacha is extraordinary as an impromptu prelate of the Comédie-Française. What a sense of irony and comedy in this imitative silhouette of a pompous actor who believes ‘it has really happened.’” (Gérard d’Houville, Le Figaro, 18 March 1932).
Charles Gerschel (1871–1948) opened a photography studio in Paris at 23 boulevard des Capucines, later at 5 rue de Prony. A portraitist, he won a prize at the Brussels exhibition in 1910. He was the son and successor of Aaron Gerschel (1832–1910), who photographed, among others, the actress Polaire, Colette’s interpreter, in her role in Claudine à l’école (Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens, 1902).
