L’Équipée malaise is Jean Echenoz’s third novel: another geographical novel and, as he himself put it, “an adventure book.” Across 250 pages, conventional narrative material is set slightly off-kilter, producing an action that seems almost to run on its own momentum: “The idea of the novel as a fiction engine, which sometimes begins strangely to misfire, appeals to me. But, as with anything systematic, one must also work against it. These are engines threatened by the risk of malfunction, and it is precisely that risk I want to explore.”

A fine copy with distinguished publishing provenance: Sylvie Genevoix, a journalist for Le Figaro and L’Express, was literary director at Éditions Albin Michel, which she joined in 1992. She is also the daughter of Maurice Genevoix, the novelist and academician, author of Raboliot and Ceux de 14.
