First edition of the diplomatic correspondence of Guicciardini (1483–1540) during his embassy to Ferdinand of Aragon (1511–1513), sent to secure the king's acceptance of an alliance between the Republic of Florence and France. This was no small matter, given Florence's instability at the time, but the mission was ultimately accomplished, thanks to parallel correspondence between Francesco, his father and his brothers, who managed to compensate for the weaknesses and reluctance of the official diplomatic channels and to keep Francesco informed of the international situation.
Paolo Paruta (1540–1598) was a Venetian diplomat, writer and renowned historiographer.
