Le Train de 8 h 47

Paris, C. Marpon et E. Flammarion, [1888].
1 vol. (120 x 185 mm) of 293 p., [1] and 1 f. In wrappers, in chemise and slipcase.
First edition. First printing of the illustrations by Steinlen and Durvis.

First edition of a Courteline classic, illustrated with 41 compositions in the text that immediately established Courteline’s “barracks” aesthetic. This series of fierce and comic tales about the absurdities of fin-de-siècle military life — regulations, petty harassment, small cowardices — made Courteline one of the masters of French satire. Its success led to a stage adaptation in three acts, first performed in Paris at the Théâtre de l’Ambigu-Comique on November 18, 1910.

The text was often reprinted and re-illustrated in the twentieth century, but the 1888 printing remains the first appearance.

Minor rubbing; rare.
