Alexander Mattock Thompson was a German-British journalist and writer, born in 1861. He grew up in Paris — he attended the Lycée Saint-Louis — before moving to Manchester at the end of the nineteenth century. He adapted several plays for the theater before pursuing, after the First World War, a career as a journalist. He published an autobiography in 1937 (Here I Lie, Routledge). It is not known to whom he gave this celebrated English edition of Le Silence de la mer, but the transmission is a moving one. He died in London on 25 March 1948.

Published in London and prefaced by Maurice Druon, under the patronage of General de Gaulle, by Claude Divonne de Boisgelin for Les Cahiers du Silence.
Divonne de Boisgelin directed the information services of the FFL in London. Dated 25 July 1943 — the same day as the second Éditions de Minuit edition — it followed by one month a printing of 100 copies, printed in June, in red boards.
