First performed on 4 June 1666, to a mixed reception. In the autumn, while Le Médecin malgré lui was also on stage, Le Misanthrope was performed for the last time, on 21 October. Between Molière’s death and the end of the reign of Louis XIV, it received some two hundred and ninety-nine performances. Molière is known to have played Alceste himself, and the inventory taken after his death describes the costume: “A box containing the costume of the Misanthrope, consisting of breeches and a doublet of gold- and gray-silk-striped brocade, lined with tabby, trimmed with green ribbon; the gold brocade waistcoat; silk stockings and garters.”
